Coach Scot Baseball Sundays

Coach Scot Sunday Ball is a clinic-style format designed so that each player improves their skills physically, as well as their knowledge of the game and its rules. It is voluntary and unaffiliated and FREE. And more than anything, Sunday Baseball is F-U-N! Each week begins with fundamental instruction and drills, designed to improve all abilities for all skill levels. We work on fielding, catching, throwing, hitting, and specializations such as first base, pitcher and catcher. This is followed by a fun 'pickup' game.

Coach Scot Baseball is for players of any ability, from those just learning the game to those who are trying out for their school or travel teams. We learn fundamentals and rules, and the goal is to become better players and teammates.

In lieu of payment, for each season that kids are registered, they are required to participate in at least one Community Service project which we call Serve All and Play Ball. This can be one of our organized events, or one in your own neighborhood. Events on Roosevelt Island will be coordinated with a community-based organization with a few different options for days and times throughout the season.

Ages

Registration is for kids over the age of 7 and under the age of 14 during each season.

When

The sessions run every Sunday in the summer, fall, winter, and spring. We add in breaks between seasons and for school holidays. There are different session times throughout the day based on age and experience.

Tentative Session Times, Winter

Winter sessions usually begin with the first 90-minute session at noon, followed by consecutive 90-minute sessions throughout the day. Kids are placed into sessions based on age and experience with the final session of the oldest and most experienced kids beginning around 4:30.

Once registration is complete, you can see which group your kid is in from the Coach Scot Crossbar Registration website by clicking on ACCOUNTS on the upper left, and then click on your child's profile picture (or placeholder). Scroll down on that page until you see the TEAMS section.

You can also see the session time using the Crossbar app on your mobile device. Click the Menu item in the upper left corner, then click on TEAMS. You will see each of your kid's TEAM listed. Click on a TEAM to see the session times for that TEAM.

What to Bring

Kids should bring their own hat, sneakers or cleats, and glove. They should bring batting helmets if they have one. We have extra helmets, but we strongly recommend that all ballplayers have their own helmet that fits comfortably. You can buy them online or at Dick's Sporting Goods or on our CSB Swag website.  We also have bats.

Boys who play the catcher position must wear protective cups. No metal cleats and no slides allowed. And always send water!

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if it rains?

  • We almost never cancel before Sunday due to a bad forecast, as sometimes they get it wrong, and our field dries pretty quickly once the rain stops.
  • We usually don't send an email if baseball is NOT cancelled. (Similar to an umpire yelling FOUL BALL. They don't say anything if the ball is NOT foul).
  •  If the field is unplayable on Sunday morning and we have to cancel, we email the Members as soon as possible. This can come as late as one hour before your session time or, in the case of an unexpected rain, even later.
  • If it is not raining and the field is playable before the first group begins, we head out to set up the field.
  • During the day, if rain makes the field unplayable, or in the case of thunder or lightning, we stop play immediately and instruct the kids to head home. We do not leave until the last kid has an exit plan and is off the field. Once we pack up the equipment and return home, we'll send an email updating the remaining groups. This can be up to 20 minutes after we abandon the field.
  • Those of you who come from off-island and may be enroute will have to decide if you think the forecast is worth making the trip. Remember, the choice is yours--and your kids--and Sunday ball is voluntary, no one gets penalized for missing a day due to weather.
  • There are no makeups for Sunday baseball, sadly. Take that up with Mother Nature.

What if we are traveling during the summer?

For summer sessions only: Go ahead and sign up your kid(s). Use the Comments section of the form to list the dates that you cannot attend Sunday baseball. Many folks are traveling, and we can usually work around folks' schedules. But please do not sign up if you cannot commit to half of the Sundays, as space is limited.

What do we do if our Sunday plans change?

We understand that family activities and priorities are constantly changing, and sometimes Sunday baseball is no longer a priority. We ask that once that happens, please let us know so that we can reassign the spot to someone from the WaitList.

Any Sunday baseball participant who does not attend 2 of the first 4 sessions will be automatically removed from his/her spot to make way for kids from the WaitList.
